I'm new around this loop, but I offer a friendly greeting to any and all that wish to receive it. I'm an aspiring dealer in the Jacksonville, Florida area. I'm only 18 years of age, but am very interested in making dealing poker my career choice. You may have seen me in a few poker rooms, but more often than not, The Poker Room at St. John's Greyhound Park in Jacksonville. I would have been the biker with the white tiger card protector and tiger poker badge (Also my avatar). I used to play quite a bit of Texas Hold'em, 40+ hours a week or more, but have recently held back because of a growing (almost uncontrollable) addiction to the game. I, unfortunately, am one of the unluckiest players in the game (or so it seems). No matter how well I play, I never can manage to make a decent wage by playing...I end up losing out in the end to ridiculous bad beats. But that is no matter. I have kept my spirits high and have found a new way to keep myself around the game without having to lose any of my hard-earned wages to do so. In fact, I get to MAKE money by being involved!
As of now, I've been working on getting a job as a dealer for around 8 months at one of the rooms in Jacksonville. Unfortunately, I was never able to secure a spot, and with the layoffs and overstaffed signals popping up, it isn't looking good. I found another route though. Originally, my dealer class would have been free, simply by going through this room, but instead, I get to take the $1,050.00 route. But still, I'm very happy. After all this time waiting, wanting, hoping, I'm finally officially enrolled in a dealer course and start Monday. After my course is complete, I'll need to find a poker room to hire me near Jacksonville. If anyone knows about any legitimate rooms needing dealers, please let me know. Hopefully I will be good enough to deal at the room of which the class is held by and won't need it, but there is no harm in having extra information. I should be good enough by the end of the course though. I have no doubt in my mind that I can exceed greatly in this field of work simply because I love it so much.
I have seen so many varying numbers that is increasingly difficult to figure out just how much of a wage I will be earning. I have heard as low as $30,000 a year, but up to $80,000 a year or more. I'm expecting somewhere around $50,000 a year, but always hope for more (though 50k a year would DEFINITELY sustain me). As a good dealer, how many hands an hour should I expect to get out with slow players? Fast players? I appreciate any input.
Oh...and I can't WAIT to put in my two weeks at my current job.
