Member Posts: 2 06/23/08 07:42	Hi there. I've 20 yrs experience of table games, can deal it all, done it all, floorman, shiftboss..etc... Been there done that, seen it all and heard it all. 20 yrs ago, I asked if someone would teach me craps and was told I was to short and a female. I've wanted to learn for years! I now have the chance to learn. And I'm excited! Something new after 20 yrs! I want to know…where do I start? I've read through this forum and read the same responses…go to school. No way. I'm to far from any school. I don't need a mat. I've been staring at craps tables to long for that. Any other suggestions?

Any other suggestions? bend over and deal, Without any of the teaching aids that you say are inappropriate, I would say getting on a game and dealing it with the guidance of a baxman and fellow dealers is your only option. BTW, I find it hard to believe that you could be a shift boss in a casino that offers a craps game without knowledge of the game. Correct me if I'm wrong, but a shift boss requires thorough knowledge of all the games offered by the casino you work in.

Member Posts: 13 06/23/08 11:47	I'm not quite sure what it is you're seeking; you are asking questions that I would assume you should already know the answers to if you have been in the biz for 20 years. Let alone being a shift boss in charge of the joint. I'm all about helping people out with dice or the casino world in general, but when you have been dealing for that long and are still in the dark with these questions, that seems rather strange. I would assume you would be able to ask your co-workers these questions and have them train you first hand in dice. You said that you "now have the chance to learn". What do you mean by that? Is your casino doing some sort of training or what? And if you don't need a mat, then where do you stand as far as your intelligence of the game? Because regardless how long you have been dealing BJ, RO, etc... you are starting from scratch when learning dice. Like I have said many times before, dice will take at least five years experience to really know what you are doing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a shift boss requires thorough knowledge of all the games offered by the casino you work in. We had a table games shift manager hired from the outside, with NO CASINO EXPERIENCE. (He had a piece a paper that proved that we was smart...a degree.), needless to say he failed. My company, and Harrahs seem to be doing this. My company hired many other "talented" (with a college degree) people without any gaming experience for gaming management jobs, who failed miserably. I really felt sorry for those people, because they were so happy that they FINALLY had a "real job", and they could support their families....then a few months later they were offered part time dealer jobs, because they didn't work out. Of course these people declined the part time dealer position, because it was a HUGE pay cut from full time floor supervisor. Its wrong for the casino to do this, because it creates friction towards the new hires, because they are inexperienced, and the casino is setting them up for failure in the end. You have to have SOME casino experience to be effective in the position. Thankfully, my casino quickly learned its lesson, and they don't practice this way of hiring anymore.... Perhaps I'm taking this the wrong way, but you need to get off your "high horse" with the i'm too good to learn it like everyone else attitude. Any good true dice dealer practices at home, most likely has a mat, and goes over drop cutting, press moves, crazy prop bets, over and over and over again. This isn't a game like mini-bac or a dumb carnival game that can be learned in a day. You have to build up a certain mind-frame and crazy dexterity with your hands unlike any other game in this business. Ask one of the dealers in your casino for their old craps instructional handbook. Go over everything over and over again on a craps mat. Its totally different than just looking at a layout walking by in your casino. I would check with your casino to see if they might offer a dice class sometime soon as that is the best way to learn....our craps class was 2 months long, 4 hours a day... Even sending the dice with the stick takes a long time to get good at.

What I was looking for...years ago, I had a manual for craps, loaned it out and never got it back. And suggestions for manuals/books and the where abouts to get them?

You cant learn this game by reading a manual, and as a shift boss, You can't trust anyone else to be a supplement for personal knowledge. All that Aside, My suggestion to you is that you get ass holes and elbows into a craps game and learn it.

I don't have a black belt in any marshal arts discipline but I firmly believe that becoming a proficient craps dealer has to be almost as difficult. But, you learn a whole lot more on a live game than you will ever really get from 150-200 hours of classroom time. Another caveat: I went to class at age 46. It is a lot easier to get this craft down if you are younger. I see twenty somethings coming out of craps class and being at near my level in a year or two. I have dealt it for 8 years. Having said all that I would have not made it without Dale Yeasel's book, (on CD in .pdf format) "Precision Craps Dealing," along with Scott's practice mat and his videos. And then practice, practice, practice. I also benefited greatly from spending hours on the old "stump a lump" section of this web site. (I've given up on Scott bringing that one back. The current one is weak) So if you have the opportunity to just plug into a game then side up with a couple of mentors, (not necessarily easily found) expect some hazing (especially since you have had management experience) and then get the tools mentioned above which are available via this site. Then plan at least a couple of hours a day doing the homework.
