I'm thinking I want to be a dealer... |

So, I'm thinking I want to be a dealer. I'm moving to Las Vegas next week and have started looking at the dealer schools on line. Is there much of a
difference between them? How long does it take to actually make money, assuming I'm not a complete idiot?? I was thinking of starting with Blackjack
& either Craps or Roulette...any suggestions on that? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Go to Community College of Southern Nevada. I've heard they will give you the most effective learning environment and is probably better structured than
any other dealing school you will find. Once you get past the El Cortez phase of your career, it "might" set you apart from other applicants. Of
course if you just cant deal worth a damn during and audition, it doesn't matter where you went to school.
Don't expect to earn much at your fist gig, you'll be lucky if you break $20 a day in tokes. O'Shea's will take break-ins right from school as well as slots-a-fun. There's the good old El Cortez, Western and Jokers Wild for break in gigs. If you have a room mate or other living arrangement where you don't have to support the brunt of the household expenses you will do okay financially. Try to get into a place like Bill's, Gold Coast, The Cannery or some of the Stations for a second gig. expect to spend at least 3 months dealing in some dump break in joint though first. After that expect to spend the next 1-3 years perfecting your skills and learning any game that will make you a more desirable applicant to a nice club. One way to work your way into a high end ouse is to stay with the same company and apply internally for the better clubs. For instance, you break in at O'shea's for 6 months to a year and move to Flamingo. You can stay there and make decent money and try to move to Caesars from there. Start by learning your core games. 21, Craps and Roulette. Once you get a gig, they will teach you the carnies. After you get a gig where you can make at least "okay" money ($80-$100 per day) you can start learning games like Baccarat and Pai Gow Tiles. Putting as many games as you can on your resume will set you apart from others. Don't rush to get to the big time. Focus on learning to be the best before you are expected to be the best. I would say that it takes about 5 years before anyone will believe that you could be a good all around dealer. Don't just learn to be good technically, learn to take pride in what your do and be a professional. Don't just stand there and be a card snapper, learn to look up and make eye contact with the players, talk to them, joke with them and entertain them. Don't let it be just a job, take pride in what you do. You will experience burn out. Durring this phase, you will hate everyone that comes to your table. You will want to do nothing but stand at a dead game all night. This is normal, and knowing that it's normal will be a big advantage for you. Eventually, you will wake up one day and tell yourself, "self, I'm just not going to let myself have a bad day." You will realize that no one else but you can make you feel anything. The bad players will blend in with the great players, you will take it all in stride. You will be able to fall asleep at night not dreading going to work the next day. Burn out is normal, I would venture to say that everyone goes through it at some point as a dealer. This is just my opinion, feel free to take it with a grain of salt. Others may have more advice that may be better suited for you. |

beware of schools that promise placement assistance. I went to a school across from the South Point. I gave the man 500 bucks
and we never spoke after that day. |

I would rethink the decision to become a dealer. This is a time of great uncertainty within the industry, and the future of dealing as a profession is
questionable. Right now we are in an economic downturn, I know that it's happened before but this time may be different. Fuel prices are high and many
expect them to stay that way, if not go even considerably higher. The airlines are also starting to merge and reduce flights, something that will be permanant,
this will translate into much higher airfares and this is coming at a time when City Center, Echelon Place, Encore, etc will add thousands of rooms to Vegas
slicing a shrinking pie even thinner.

Fun question of the day: Which people applying
for a dealer's job at the Encore have the
stones to even broach the subject of tokes splitting with the interviewer/auditioner?

My source is several dealers I know at Wynn. The floor at Encore will get a base pay of $150 plus a full share of tokes.I'm sorry, I just cant accept that what you hear from other dealers as being reliable enough to support your claim that Encore floor will be making $150 plus a full share. I'm not saying that you haven't heard right, I would like just a little more support to this claim than what "Several dealers" have told you. Let me know when you get at least 5 people who have been hired on as floor at encore to tell you thins and I might be inclined to believe it to be accurate. It's not that I dont trust you, I just don't trust your source. |
