I work at a casino in the Midwest. The other night a player on my end is playing the don'ts, lays $20 on a point of 5. I know it's improper, and
maybe I should have noticed, but I didn't. No big deal. 7 out. $13.33, I pay him $13. Base on the other end says it only pays $12, she says $18 gets
$12 and $2 left over gets nothing because it's improper. I have no clue where she gets that logic from, I just pay it $13, box wasn't exactly sure.
This other base has been around for some time, and she's all "No, you're wrong." I tried to explain to her that it's $13.33 and we round
down, so it's $13. I even tried to explain to her that $2 would get $1.33, so 18 = 12 and 2 = 1 after rounding. She still just kept repeating over and
over "No, you're wrong." In an ideal world it'd be all proper bets, but whatever. Until I'm told that we're no longer booking or
paying improper bets, they can bet whatever they like.
Well, this question went around at work a bit and I was really surprised at the responses. I don't see how it's even a debate, or how there is "another side" to this. We book improper bets, we pay them what we can, but we round down. For example, if a player has $15 odds on a point of 5 (we don't keep $0.50 or $2.50 chips at the craps table), he gets paid $22. We don't pay him $21 for his $14 and then just say the extra dollar is improper and gets nothing.
Dealer responses were mostly "I dunno. $12?" or "I don't really know. I don't care." Few said it paid $13. Some boxes said they'd pay it for $18 and hand back the $2. Some boxes said $12. People who said $13 were in the minority. To those who said $12 I figured they didn't really think about it so I followed up with, 'what do you pay a $2 lay on the 5 or 9?" and a few even said "Um, I no bet that." Is everyone taking crazy pills? $13 and shouldn't even be up for debate, am I right?
