I hear a song, and I immediately "break it apart".
The "Silversun Pickups" sound like "The Smashing Pumpkins" 'should' sound like now. Obviously, the "Pumpkins" had a HUGE influence on them.
When I start to explain this process to someone else, they kind of look at me like, "What!?! I just hear the song, I'm not thinking about all that went into it."
Then I'm like, "What!?! How can you NOT think about what into it." I believe by doing so, that you "cheapen" the experience of hearing the song for the first time. You'll NEVER get another chance at hearing a song for the first time. So PAY ATTENTION to it when you do! One should feel the impact of emotions that the artist was trying to connect with you (the listener) upon the very first listening of the recorded track.
When I hear a song, I want to know what the artist was thinking at the time. I want to know what were their influences. I want to know what was the inspiration for the song. I want to know what other songs does this particular piece of art remind me of. In other words... I want to know it ALL. I "have" to know it all... if I don't, then I'll listen to it until I do know everything about it. It's kind of an obsession of mine.
I will now interpret the song "Lazy Eye" by the "Silversun Pickups" for anyone that's interested. (This is how MY mind interprets music. I know it's at another level than most. I think I may be some sort of "idiot savant" when it comes to listening to music. I'm NOT exxaggerating here... this is REALLY what goes on in my melon when I listen to a song.)
LAZY EYE by the SILVERSUN PICKUPS
INTRO 00:00 to 00:15- It sounds like any other cool kinda song... so far, so good.
VOCALS 00:33 A FEMALE voice. Nice, I wasn't expecting that. ... Pretty cool... it builds... (...builds to what? I don't know! Let's see... This song may be dangerous... it's not like the others. It's unpredictable... this is unchartered waters.)
01:00 Where did THAT guitar come from?
01:19 ANOTHER strange guitar... What's going on here!?!
( ...This song is building towards a climax. Is it building towards a climax? If it IS building towards a climax, then WHEN is the climax?)
01:45 Is this IT? Wow! What a song! Wait... maybe it's not! Wait, man... that's a distorted guitar!
02:39 The guitar is "off note"... it's "pitchy"... what's all this? Is it "preparing" us for what's next?... I think so, because BAM!"
02:45 BAM! That's what! Listen to this guy howl! Billy Corgan, eat your heart out!
03:39 Whoa!... gotta bring this down a notch or two... Ahhh! Nice, a FEMALE voice again.
03:23 Some "other worldly" guitar... nice. Very soothing. It balances out the DESTRUCTION of the MALE'S voice. Kink of "Pink Floyd-ish".
03:58 Listen to the drums! My Lord! Where is this song going? Maybe it's "not" in balance after all. Maybe it's going to "run off" again.
04:54 The "Hook"... it brings is all back home again. But this time, it's somehow... "different". I'm guessing our EXPERIENCE through the earlier part of the song has now changed out perception of it now. Nice... very satisfying. Actually, it's PERFECT.
Unexpected ending... no chorus... no "bringing it home".
It leaves the ending up to ME... the "ending" is up to MY imagination.
I now have this song "IN MY HEAD". I'm in control of it... so therefore, it's in control of me. The song writer has emmeshed the song into my conscience. BRAVO! Bravo, indeed!
I want to thank "iTod" for bringing this song to my experience. I don't think I would have heard of them otherwise.
Most songs are tripe. This one is NOT!
This song does what music is intended to do... That is to take my MIND on a journey and to tell a story. This song does so by it's lyrical content and it's musical production. Notice I did not say that it was complicated to duplicate. It's not hard to play on guitar. That's not the point! The point is that it is an original piece of production and it resonates with the listener like few songs do nowadays.
Kudos to the "Silversun Pickups."
There's so much GARBAGE out there to listen to, it's refreshing to hear something that challenges my musical intellect and stirs my imagination.
The radio is dead.
