Also, we do not use the yellow line rule in our room. They come over the line with a handful of chips and cut out the amount of chips they wish to bet-no verbal is given. Most palyers are o.k. with this, but wev'e had many that argue that this is a string bet. Help!

I might understand how some nit would argue that the whole stack has to be bet (i don't agree I just can understand how they reach that belief)

The player must announce "raise" before cuttting chips in a forward motion. I would hold the player to a call. I don't know why it's so hard for some of these punters to announce their action. Don't let them get away with that shit.

Furst I have never seen this called a string bet anywhere. are you really claiming now that if I am faced with a bet of $25 and I come out with a $50 in my hand and set them, down in two stacks of $25 thats a string bet? because thats the way your post reads.

Yes it would be nice if the person would announce a raise but this is not mandatory. A string bet would be if the person stopped and then started back or if they went back to their stack, but cutting chips in one motion is not a string bet under any circumstance. As a floor I would make the call that it is a raise every time.

But we also have a "forward motion" rule. Whatever chips you bring out, that's what you are are require to raise, within the legal limits. I usually warn them once, "Sir, we have a forward motion rule, etc......" and if they do it again, it's a bet. Once they end up betting random large stack a few times, they get the idea. For both string betting and forward motion, the best remedy is to announce you intentions before you make a move. I say that a lot, too.

A "string bet" is when a player puts chips out, then goes back for more. In this case, the player is bringing chips out, but only leaving a portion of them out there; taking the rest back. That is not quite a string bet. By a strict, technical interpretation of the rules, however, this move is still not allowed. Unless you state a specific amount, any chips in your hand(s) that you bring forward represent your bet. Players have the option of stating a specific amount before moving chips forward, or counting and stacking their chips before moving them forward, there is no need to bring chips out, then bring some of them back. I know cardrooms where any chips that move beyond the betting line (or beyond the player's cards, if there is no betting line) is a bet; no exceptions. I personally agree with that. The truth is, though, that the majority of poker rooms are not nearly that strict. In my room, for example, chips are treated like a chess piece. The bet isn't final until you completely release the chips; as long as you keep a finger on your chips, you're free to add or take chips away. I hate that, but, that's the rule, so I run the game accordingly. I guess I'm just a nit.

As a brand new dealer just recently completing dealers school I can say that this area was discussed in somewhat detail, however, it was determined to fall within the policies of the card room. I remember saying at the time of this discussion that eventually we will see an instant reply option added to poker in order to replay the action for all of these gray area house rules that exist. All the elements required are already in place and all that is left is to install the monitors above the dealers heads and a reply button next to the dealer. When will there be an international standard agreed upon by all gaming establishments of which a dealer can truly rely upon to run their game? Not likely to be any time soon. One additional house rule that has not been mentioned in this thread but was discussed in our class was the touch down rule in which cutting chips was acceptable and any chips remaining in the palm when pulling away from the stack dropped on the table were not considered a bet. And to think that the responsibilities placed upon a poker dealer are valued at minimum wage. JoeDirt

At least, that is the case here in Florida. If you pass the line (or your cards, if you have no betting line), all of the chips you pass with are part of your bet and you are required to raise to that amount. If it is less than half of the bet more, you can take it back (known as the half-bet rule), but if it is half or more, you must raise to the next minimum raise amount or to the amount total in your hand. It is different for different rooms, but that is the rule here.

There is an error in your posting concerning the half bet rule. The OP referred to a NLHE game, the half bet rule is a Limit rule only, it does not apply to no limit games.
