What are some tricks of the trade when it comes to making tokes? For example $10 BJ payout, Give the player $5 in white. (soft hustling)

"THAT would get you canned in our casino"
YOU cant be serious...I agree that it is a tacky move, but to get fired for that.....hmmm. I use fun, joking phrases , (If I am dumping on a BJ game, but no tokes are coming in.) "Wow, Im taking care of you guys like you were my brothers! Dont let the casino know that we might be related!" Usually laughs and tokes come my way after that. On craps if I am on stick and singing like a songbird, after another point was made. "4 easy 4, front line winner pay the line, etc., wow what a stickman!" OR "Coming out again, some hot shooter, same good stickman!" If I am on base and the stick is singing, I'll make a comment on how "great of a job the stick is doing, making money for these fine people". When a dealer bet is placed, book the bet a little louder than normal, and be sure to over thank the player that placed if for you. On Roulette if I hit a number with a large payout, as I push the big stack to the player, I'll say, "Very nice hit, I think that I hit the right number for you this time!" Or if a player tosses me a toke, I'll say jokingly "Oh, I know which numbers to aim for now!" This usually causes other players to chime in, "Hey, I'll tip ya if you hit me numbers too!" Then you go from there... I think that if you make the players feel that you are working with them as a "team" against the casino, they like that. I like to use this line when I am dumping on any game, "We're sticking it to Mr. Harrahs (ex.) now, eh boys!?!" Usually gets big laughs, but be careful, because some casinos are over sensitive and could take objection to that comment.

Ever hear the phrase "don't learn the tricks of the trade, learn the trade"? There are little things you can do, I'm not a big fan of
softhustling, unless you are going for your own. One thing i'd do, is just be blatant when someone bets for you, and see if you can't get them to ask
what that is, so if they don't know you get tips (some really don't know dealers get tipped) they will know, and if they do know, I just kill em with
kindness. I've never been a fan of "Hey look of all this money i'm giving you! hint, hint" or the five singles move. In craps you can always
just feed them singles, see if you can't get them to bet for you.

I have to disagree that it is corny to give the player $1 chips. Do you think it is corny when the waitress gives you singles for your $5.40 change? Of course
it is not corny she is just looking our for #1. Most players will tip if they get a BJ but if they do not have singles they are not likely to toke. I will even
go so far as to give $5 in singles on a $100 buy-in. I really don't like the attitude that I would do that If I were going for my own tokes. That seems to
be the biggest problem with splitting tokes. People don't feel like they have to do thier part because the other dealers are dropping tokes for them. The
only thing that I agree with so far is that you should give good customer service. Most of the tokes that I made as a dealer came from flirting with the
customer. I learned this trick at the strip clubs. The ladies made you feel like you were very important to them and you give them all of your money. Another
strong way of getting tokes is to get to know your players and use and remember their name. What are some more ways or tricks to making tokes?

I think the 5 white on a $10 blackjack is a pretty hard hustle and I would never do it. All it takes is that one asshole floor to be in the area when a player
asks "Why am I getting all this white?" Floor glances over and they'll read in about a second what's going on. Then what are you going to
say? It's one thing when you can cover your ass, but here you can't. "Oh, I just thought maybe he wanted some white."
I was dealing at a $25 min table last night. Every time this guy got a blackjack he would tip the $2.50 chip and if I got him to win another hand I'd usually end up getting some of the nickels bet for me too. If he gets on a good run he'll check change to tip, but mostly he was using the chips from his blackjacks to tip me. So then he wasn't hitting blackjacks for a while and finally he puts $50 out there and lands a blackjack. Now what? It sucks, but you give him $75 in green. You risk really offending a player by doing it differently. Here's a good hustle I use at the $25 tables: stop converting for them. If you get that player who plays $25 and hits a blackjack and his next bet is $37.50, that bet gets paid color for color. Same with bets $30-$45. You do have to use some sense though. If you pay $37.50 color for color two hands in a row and he's still not tipping... nice try, but now it's time to start converting or the player is just going to think you're an idiot. |
